Homemade: Taco Seasoning

Since our side of beef purchase, Jason and I have been planning to make taco bowl about once a week since it's one of our favorite meals and we have a lot of ground beef to use. When we made this last week, Jason was rummaging through the pantry for taco seasoning packets and came up empty. We had bought a lot of them months ago when they were on a crazy good sale at Meijer and we didn't realize we had used the last one until the eleventh hour.

No fear, I told him, as I hopped on the laptop and searched for taco seasoning recipes. I knew taco seasoning was just made up of a bunch of different spices, so I figured we could just make our own.

Not only am I sure that this is cheaper than purchasing (we had all of the spices on hand to make this), but it's likely healthier as well. Plus, you can customize the seasoning to your own liking. We changed the recipe slightly (you can view the original here).

Ingredients
  • 1 Tbsp chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp black pepper

Mix all ingredients in a bowl. We made a half batch and used the entire half batch in our taco meat. The meat turned out perfectly with just the right taste for us.
